Osteoporosis Prevention
|
"Osteoporosis is, unfortunately, a prevalent disease associated with aging," says Marilyn Moffat, PT, DPT, PhD, FAPTA, CSCS. "Osteoporosis may cause fractures of the hip, wrist, and vertebrae, among other areas. Recovering from these fractures can be a long and complex process, with possible life-threatening complications. Strength training, along with weight bearing exercises, are two of the best forms of exercise to maintain bone mass and function and to delay frailty. Strength training is especially good for the upper extremities and the thoracic spine, since these areas often do not receive major weight-bearing exercises. A physical therapist is the best person to design a strength-training program for you that emphasizes appropriate weight training and proper alignment to ensure maximum results in the safest possible manner."
